In this Ted Talk, Rita Pierson, a grandchild and child of teachers and veteran teacher herself, draws on her extensive educational experience to discuss the power of building positive relationships with students and taking an empowerment approach to teaching. And, of course, I’ve had teachers who’ve managed to suck all the fun and interest out of a course which I thought I would love….but who hasn’t? Therefore, what Rita Pierson is trying to do by empowering her students and focusing on the positive, is truly commendable and I believe most, not just teachers, but people in general could learn quite a bit from her take on education.Pierson, R. I have also had teachers and professors who I’ve absolutely adored and who made me fall in love with the material all over again. For example, I have had several amazing teachers who were able to make me interested in the material they were teaching because of their charisma and the care and help they offered to their students, even if I had not particularly been enamored with the subject matter before the class. To me, in my personal rank of what I believe to be most important in learning environments even above the willingness of the student to be open to new ideas and to want to learn lies the connection and motivation which a teacher is able to foster with his or her students. As a teacher, positivity is so important. Even when it feels as though everything is going wrong, there has to be some positive. Not only as a teacher, or a student, but as a person. In that one little phrase, Pierson made me want to change. Pierson said, on a twenty question quiz and a student got 18 questions wrong, she would put a “+2 (:” on the paper because the student did not get them all wrong. I can admit to searching for the “TED talk teacher in a red dress” multiple times when I did not do well on an exam or felt hopeless in the material I was learning. But in a student’s perspective, she makes you feel your worth even when you don’t believe in yourself. Instead of giving up on students who previously did not have any motivation to learn, she instilled motivation in her students.īeing a student who wants to pursue education, I look at her and hope that when I am actually in the field that I will be able to do the same to my students.

In the TED talk, she mentions an academically low class and her thought process on how to get the students to where they needed to be by the time the school year was over. Well she admits that she cannot stand some of her students, but she does her best to love them regardless. He instilled not only passion, motivation and a desire to learn his subject, but he also taught me how important it is to create a relationship with my other teachers. Pierson, shares her love for teaching but also her love for every student she teaches. My teacher not only respected me, but made an effort to be a part of his students’ lives. If you think back to a time when you learned the most, did you have a relationship with the person teaching that material? Personally, my favorite teacher, the class that I succeeded in, and I had a wonderful relationship with that teacher. Pierson, focuses on the relationship and how through healthy relationships, only then learning can occur. She makes it a point to encourage educators to believe in their students and form connections with them on a real, human, personal level. Rita Pierson, a teacher of over 40 years, attempted to share her philosophy of educating her students while also empowering them.

I come to her for inspiration when ever I need to feel better about myself as a student, but also as a future educator. I have watched countless of TED talks ranging from magic to prosthetic legs to mathematics, yet I always come back to my favorite talk which is a lady in a red dress. After watching Adichie’s TED talk, I decided to explore the world of TED deeper than I have before.
